Top FIVE Beers Every Beer Lover Should Know

Whether you are just beginning to explore the world of beer or you are a seasoned beer snob, these are brews that you should know. In compiling this list, I’ve tried to put together a list of beers that are 1) solid representatives of their respective styles 2) seem to have a decent market saturation so you will have a chance of finding them 3) generally cover the spectrum of beer styles.

1) Paulaner Hefe-Weizen - the best representation of this style, Paulaner, is easily found almost anywhere. Chill a bottle and pour it in a glass making sure to get all of that yeast out of the bottom of the bottle. Many fans of this style like to squeeze a lemon into their glass. That’s fine but save that for the second one. For the first, just enjoy this hallmark of Bavarian brewmasters’ craft all on its own.

2) Chimay Trappist Ales - The entry for the Trappist ales, a rich malty style noted for being crafted by monks, is Chimay. You will find that a few varieties are available from the Chimay brewery but any of them will do nicely.

3) Sierra Nevada Pale Ale - this is a great example of the American interpretation of this classic English brew. It is amber colored and has a nice balanced flavor. It is hopped with distinctive Cascade hops.

4) Guinness Dry stout - This famous beer is perhaps one of the best known beers in the world. With a small dose of beer soured by lactic acid bacteria in each batch, Guinness might not be the prototypical dry stout but it is so ubiquitous it is hard to deny it a spot on my list. Other perhaps more correct choices for this style would be Murphy’s or Beamish Stout.

5) Hoegaarden Wit Bier - Hoegaarden is at the fore of a revival of the Belgium white, an unusual wheat beer. This is one of the best examples of the mix of spicy yeast and cloudy white that marks a Belgium white.

There will be those that disagree let us no with your comments all the beers are available on the website so try us out today!!!!!

Oktoberfest Is Here

Oktoberfest is a sixteen-day festival held each year in Munich, Germany during late September (and running to early October). It is one of the most famous events in Germany and the world's largest fair, with some six million people attending every year, and is an important part of Bavarian culture. Other cities across the world also hold Oktoberfest celebrations, modeled after the Munich event.

The Munich Oktoberfest, traditionally, takes place during the sixteen days up to and including the first Sunday in October. In 1994, the schedule was modified in response to German reunification so that if the first Sunday in October falls on the 1st or 2nd, then the festival will go on until October 3 (German Unity Day). Thus, the festival is now 17 days when the 1st Sunday is October 2 and 18 days when it is October 1.

At BeerHere we have come up with a Oktoberfest Mix Tasting case for those who are not fortunate enough to get themselves over to Munich. Including the Paulaner, Augustiner, Hofbrau, Spaten, Erdinger, and Lowenbrau Oktoberfest special brews, with a free erdinger glass. So come on get in the spirit and enjoy Oktoberfest in style.

Barack Obama is also having a Beer at the end of the day

It's official, Barack Obama is Part of the Beer Conspiracy!
In perhaps the most unusual sitdown of his administration, President Barack Obama hosted Prof Henry Gates, a prominent black scholar, and Sgt James Crowley, a white police sergeant, for beers in the White House Rose Garden on Thursday evening.

Mr Obama was hoping to defuse the angry racial furore that has raged since Sgt Crowley arrested Prof Gates for disorderly conduct at the Harvard academic’s own home in Cambridge, Massachusetts on July 16.

The President has acknowledged that he fuelled the controversy when he said that the police “acted stupidly” for arresting Prof Gates after he protested vociferously about Sgt Crowley’s actions during a burglary investigation.
Mr Obama invited the two men and Vice-President Joe Biden to join him for a symbolic beer and chat and to talk over their differences.

Brewdog Brewery Under Fire!

The legendary Scottish craft brewery Brewdog has was under fire yesterday from critics and various newspapers.

The award winning brewery has released the new batch of Tokyo at 18.2% ABV (last year's was 12% ABV)
This highly anticipated beer is brewed with jasmine and cranberries in the kettle and then dry-hopped with bucket loads of American hops. After dry-hopping Brewdog then age the beer on fantastic French toasted vanilla oak chips for 4 weeks. The beer is fermented with a champagne yeast and uses an insane amount of malt.

All sounds great doesn't it?
Well not according to the Alcohol Focus Scotland chief executive Jack Law, who claims that beers with such a high ABV (alcohol by volume) could cause as much damage as binge drinking! "This company is completely deluded if they think that an 18.2% ABV beer will help solve Scotland's alcohol problems," he said. "It is utterly irresponsible to bring out a beer which is so strong at a time when Scotland is facing unprecedented levels of alcohol-related health and social harm. "Just one bottle of this beer contains six units of alcohol - twice the recommended daily limit."

I personally can't see what all the fuss is about! Brewdog are only releasing a small batch of 3000 samples of Brewdog Tokyo. The beer can be ordered from the Brewdog website here and can be delivered outside of the UK. These 3000 bottles will go all over the place (to be precise Around 2,000 bottles have been sold to retailers abroad, and only 1,000 remain in the UK)so our friend Jack Law doesn't really have to worry about the "Scotland's alcohol problems" as the UK let alone Scotland won't be the sole receiver of this devilish beer.

"All we can see is that it will add to the binge drinking culture. They are promoting the high ABV which they should not be allowed to do." says Sarah Matthews from the British Liver Trust.

Brewdog have priced the beer at just shy of £10 pounds per 330ml bottle and encouraged it as a beer to savor. At this price I can't really see any binge drinkers forking out £10 for 330ml of drunken fun! Binge drinkers have little interest in this kind of beer. They are far more likely to pop down to the local CO-OP and spend £3 on a litre and a half of white lightning! Never mind faffing about online and waiting patiently for their £10 bottle of tiny Tokyo. Brewdog Tokyo is marketed to people who enjoy and understand beer not hoodlums.

The ABV is so high as it is used as a backbone to maintain the unique body and flavours of this very special beer.

Health campaigners should find something far more important to worry about and take a step back to admire this outstanding technical achievement!

Homebrewing

Homebrewing carries with it an image of middle-aged men in baggy jumpers and broken spectacles, hiding in their garden sheds, searching for that elusive drinkable beer, like alchemists looking for gold, but merely producing an undrinkable flat brown liquid.

The truth is slightly different.

Homebrewing has gained in popularity since the late 1970s and early 1980s as a reaction to the few major breweries which produced only streamlined beers for the mass market. Since then, micro-brewers (small breweries which typically make a regional beer) and brewpubs (pubs which brew their own beer sold only in the pub) have had their small market share, as has homebrewing.

A few companies and micro-brewers, many of which had been in the homebrew brigade themselves, filled a gap in a niche market and are producing brewing kits that are foolproof. It is now possible to go into a shop on any high street and buy a brewing kit. Often the instructions on these are straightforward and the results taste pretty damn good, too. Buy the equipment, sterilise it, open the can, add some boiling water, stir, add some cold water, add the yeast sachet, leave for a while, drink.

With a little time, patience and care, anyone can do it.

Beerhere stocks some of the beers from micro breweries around the UK (see link)

Old beer is not harmful to health

The EU requirement introduced a consume-by date on the bottles a couple of years ago; The Objective Beer Tasters, a Belgian association of beer consumers, conducted a campaign against this measure.

The breweries are not happy with a compulsory consume-by date on the label, either. Beer does not really go off, although the flavour can change and it may turn slightly cloudy, experts advise.

Lager in particular has a tendency to cloud over time. The gradual clouding is caused by bonds being formed between proteins (from the malt) and polyphenols (from the chaff of the malt and the hops), so that is why types of malt are selected with not too high a protein content in which the proteins easily coagulate and can be removed during the brewing process.

Consumers do not like cloudy lager. Keeping lager clear is generally a sales issue. Drinking cloudy lager has no effect on the health of the drinker. Some special beers are deliberately made and sold cloudy.

The following beers would be highly recommended for a beer cellar (e.g., a cool cupboard in the basement). Suggested cellaring periods are in brackets, though they are only approximate cellaring times based on personal experiences and in some cases, brewery recommendations. Three gueuzes have been included for the simple reason that these beers have the best cellaring potential in the beer world. Frank Boon of Brouwerij Boon claims a 30-year cellar life for his gueuze beers.

Boon geuze
* Brasserie d’Achouffe N’Ice Chouffe (up to 5 years) - Belgium
* Chimay Grand Reserve Blue (up to 5 years) - Belgium
* J.W. Lees Harvest Ale 1998 (up to 10 Years) - England
* Lindemans Gueuze Cuvee Rene (up to 15 years) - Belgium
* Frank Boon Gueuze Mariage Parfait (up to 20 years) - Belgium
* Cantillon Gueuze (up to 20 years) - Belgium

It is proven: Beer belly is genetic!

Experts claim that “beer does not cause pot bellies”, The Sun reported. The newspaper said the researchers had found that heavy drinkers do put on weight, but it is spread all over their body. It said that the pot belly, long thought to be associated with drinking, may be due more to genetics.

This cohort study looked at beer consumption, weight and body measurements in almost 20,000 people on two occasions over an average of six years. It found that increased beer consumption over time was linked with increased waist circumference, particularly for men. However, once a person’s overall weight was taken into account, the significance of these associations disappeared. This suggests that any weight gain from beer is distributed all over the body, rather than being concentrated around the waist.

Jones Soda at BeerHere.co.uk

As of August 1st, 2000, Urban Juice and Soda Company Ltd. officially changed its name to Jones Soda Co ("JONES"). The story of the company began in 1987 when company founder and president, Peter van Stolk, recognized the potential of emerging "alternative" products in the beverage industry.

The company's start in the beverage world was not as a manufacturer of its own brand, but as a distributor in western Canada of other successful lines, including Just Pik't Juices, Arizona Iced Tea and Thomas Kemper sodas. By 1994, Jones was firmly established as a full line beverage distributor in western Canada, with a reputation for picking winners.

Utilizing its experience and knowledge gained in the distribution industry, JONES decided to create and distribute its own brands. In 1995, JONES created two brands of its own: WAZU Natural Spring water, launched in April 1995 and Jones Soda, launched with six flavors in January 1996. Jones Soda has been recognized and awarded for its unique packaging that features constantly changing labels that are generated and submitted by its consumers. In 2000, Jones Soda Co. launched its own version of an energy drink, named WhoopAss. The following year, in 2001, Jones Soda Co. launched 6 flavors of Jones Juice.

Good news for you guys! BeerHere now stocks all the flavours of Jones Soda!

Some of these flavours were only available in the USA.... until now!

Jones Soda is a great way to quench your thurst after a day in the sweltering heat of Britain!

Also, why not try them with Vodka and ice!??

News from the Liefmans Brewery

liefmans Kriek renamed Liefmans Cuvee Brut

By the end of 2007, Liefmans brewery were under threat of being lost. However, Duvel Moortgat decided to take over the brewery. Duvel Moortgat undertook to rescue this piece of beer heritage, and also to provide Liefmans Brewery with a new and dynamic future. As a result, the Liefmans brewery's existing premier beers have been given a new look (Liefmans Kriek renamed Liefmans Cuvée-Brut and Liefmans Goudenband) and a brand new beer, Liefmans Fruit, is being added to the range.

Liefmans Kriek renamed Liefmans Cuvée-Brut is now available at BeerHere.

Liefmans Fruit will be available soon: watch our site!

Liefmans beer characteristic and unrivalled craftsmanship is found in the mixed fermentation of its beers and master blends. Mixed fermentation simply means that the beers are first left to ferment inside open keeves causing the controlled fermentation process to be complemented by a spontaneous fermentation of the brewery's own 'making', using microflora that are unique to the specific location, on the banks of the river Scheldt in Oudenaarde. This unique method of fermentation, which to this very day is made to occur inside the authentic copper fermentation keeves that date back to the early 20th century, ensures slow-paced maturation, thereby enriching the full-bodied flavour for periods ranging anywhere from months to several years. It is this spontaneous process that also gives each bottle its very own characteristics.

Liefmans was the first brewery to wrap each bottle in tissue-paper; All the bottles are hand-wrapped.

Oz & James, Drink to Britain

The Kings Head at Huddersfield station.

Our designated driver for the night!

Stalybridge station Pub.

If you are familiar with the television series 'Oz & James, Drink to Britain'. You may remember in the first episode where they do a pub crawl in Yorkshire ending up in Lancashire.
The Pub crawl is more of a train ride on the Trans-Pennine Express to three Stations that have a Pub on the Platform and serve good real ale.
They Start off in Dewsbury then to Huddersfield (there are two pubs in this station. They went to the Kings Head rather than the Head of Steam) and ending up over the border in Lancashire at the Stalybridge Station Pub.

I fortunately live in Huddersfield, so a few pals and I decided to give this a crack.
However, Huddersfield is in the middle of the journey so we decided to opt out on Dewsbury, on our miniature Oz & James adventure.

So, we started in the Kings Head, on the platform of Huddersfield station. Meaning, when our train arrived, we could literally step out of the pub and onto the train.
There was a pretty big selection of good beer at very good prices.
I got the first round in; £8.80 for four ‘Magus’ from the Durham Brewery.
This is a great golden session ale, really easy to drink. You could taste a hint of lemon in the mouth. The name means magician. I’m not sure why they call it this. Maybe because the beer has magic inside it, making you want more? Who knows! Well, the magic did work, and a few more of these were had.
Our second beer of choice was ‘Hophead’ from the Dark Star brewery in Sussex. Again, pretty cheap: £2.10 a pint!
Another golden session ale. It smelled pretty sweet, with a touch of elderflower. Never the less, a full bodied drink despite its strength and dryness. A very drinkable and clean beer that we all enjoyed.

Half way through our second helping of ‘Hophead’, it was announced over the Tannoy that our train had arrived. Down they went, off we went to Stalybridge.

The journey over the border takes about half an hour. Not too long when your with your mates.

Stalybridge station pub is on the opposite side of the platform when arriving from Huddersfield, so a short march under that tracks gets us into our final destination for the night.

The pub itself has a warm and friendly atmosphere despite the Yorkshire/Lancashire divide! It is a nice place to be, with all sorts of railway related memorabilia plastered all over the walls (a train spotter’s dream).
Again, as promised; a large selection of good British beer. I even spotted some pretty decent Belgian beer lurking in the fridge.
First up was ‘Rainbow Chaser’ by the Wem brewery in Shrewsbury. There is some confusion in the name here. I have seen the brewery listed as Hanby Ales, but it said Wem on the tap, so Wem it is.
By this time I had had my fair share of ale, so I can’t really recall the price. Having inspected my wallet the next day, I was reassured that it was pretty cheap!
Anyway, back to the beer:
‘Rainbow Chaser’, a very pale bitter, full of flavour. A very hoppy and sweet aroma followed by tangy refreshing mouth. Another classic British ale. Probably my favourite of the evening.

My second and final choice at Stalybridge was ‘Longbow’ by the Empire brewery. I was a bit disappointed with this beer. It was very watery and smelled like soggy cardboard! It may have been that the barrel needed changing, after all it was nearing closing time.
By this time it was 23.14. One minute to wait for the train back to Huddersfield. Down the rest of the soggy cardboard went and a couple of steps back onto the trans-Pennine express.

However, all of that rushing to catch the last train home had forfeited a toilet stop! And there were no toilets on the train! With half an hour to bare and a full bladder, desperate measures had to be taken……

New Beer Available at BeerHere!

Urthel Hop-It , a new addition to the Belgian Beer range at BeerHere.co.uk!

Another Beer for the Hop Lover ! Made from 1 Malt and 3 different Hops, Urthel Hop-It Superior Hoppy Blond Ale is a wonderfully complex creation.

The Story:
Following a visit to the American Northwest in January, 2005, Hildegard returned to Belgium enthusiastic about of the differents Indian Pale Ales (IPA) she had tasted. With her passion for barley, yeast and especially hops, she wanted to brew an IPA of her own. It had to be special, an hommage to hops in the style of American Craft Brewers, but with a real Flemish touch. Her touch!
Using only different aromatic European hops and nothing but Pilsner malt, Hildegard has created a vibrant, hoppy, full-flavored top fermented and bottle conditioned golden special classic, Urthel Hop-It.

Urthel Hop-It, now a available at BeerHere Uk.

The Temple of a Million Bottles

The resident Buddhist monks at the Wat Pa Maha Chedi Kaew complex in north-east Thailand have built twenty buildings from beer bottles including; the main temple over a lake, crematorium, prayer rooms, a hall, water tower, tourist bathrooms and several small bungalows raised off the ground which serve as monks quarters.

Over all 1.5 million bottles were used. The bottle collection started in 1984. But the monks do not intend to stop there: 'The more bottles we get, the more buildings we make', says Abbot San Kataboonyo.

Recycling doesn't stop at building the temple's buildings - mosaics around the temple, predominantly of Buddha, are made out of bottle caps.
Besides being ego-friendly, the disused bottles don't fade, provide good lighting and are easy to clean.

What is YOUR Favourite beer???

I have just had a quick whizz around the BeerHere office asking my colleagues what their favourite beer is.
I had a couple of shotgun answers like: Stella and Fosters, but I know you people have more taste and a better imagination than that.
After some thought we came up with a short list of beers we had tried and enjoyed the most.

The German beers were the most popular, with two entries from Erdinger; the Hefe Wiesse and the Hefe Dunkel. Flensburger Gold was also mentioned
One Belgian beer was mentioned in the form of: Karmeliet Tripel
From America we had: Brooklyn Lager
and from France Desperados
Not a bad list for a hand full of humble office workers.

Now this list is just to get you all started. Please let us know what your favourite beer is and why buy commenting on this post. It is very simple to do. Anyone can just click comment below and put some text in. Easy as that.

If you have pictures of you favourite beer,(even you drinking that beer) and want to see them in this blog then please email them to info@beerhere.co.uk and they will be posted for you to see. (we will notify you when they are up)

Others can then comment on your posts etc. etc.

Come on people lets get a community going and have a chat about good beer???!!
